MARCH 2024
98 Years of Service to Our Community!
President's Message
Every day for me starts with a to-do list.

Throughout the course of the day, tasks get added to the list. By the end of the day, maybe the list is shorter than when the day began. Maybe not.
But the days sure fly by.

Most Rotarians are busy people. They get a lot done. Much of what they do is done in order to
help other people (“service above self’).

What does a to-do list for Rotary look like (I actually make Rotary to-do lists these days!)? The
list (for the club, not my own list) is long and impressive. What is on the list?

  • Donate to the Clothing Closets program at area schools ($17,000)
  • Organize process for choosing recipients then awarding scholarships ($80,000) to local students
  • Collaborate with Unity Rotary Club to donate to Waldo County Woodshed
  • Do the work to prepare for the annual Harbor Fest
  • Organize the golf fundraiser to raise the money to support the club’s charitable endeavors all through the year
  • Have a pancake feed
  • Contribute to the local food pantries
  • Support the 100 Fund for needy children during the holidays
  • Beautify Belfast
  • Help to eliminate polio worldwide
  • Strategically plan for the future
  • Publicize what we do
  • Focus on the vital need to grow our membership
  • And, by golly, get ready to celebrate 100 years of service by the Belfast Rotary Club!
Holy moly! What a list! Still, we can have fun and make great friendships while we get these
action items done.

Huge thanks to the members of this club for all you continue to accomplish on this worthwhile
to-do list!

PANCAKE BREAKFAST RETURNS AFTER PANDEMIC HIATUS!!

By Mary Mortier and Jane Strauss
Join Phil Carthage and flip a few pancakes on April 14th!
We are excited to announce the return of one of Belfast Rotary’s most beloved events – the semi-annual Pancake Breakfast at the Shrine Club. This is one of the Club’s longest-running events, going back over 40 years. It was also one of our biggest fundraisers in support of area food pantries and was a community tradition for many Belfast residents. It was funded by member donations and ticket sales. New this year  - drum roll please – the pancakes will be blueberry!!

Historically held on the Sunday the clocks changed in the spring and fall, some adjustments were made as the time change dates moved. This year’s first public breakfast will take place on Sunday, April 14 from 7am to 11am. Our fall date will be the first Sunday in November, in line with the time change. This is a big visibility item for the Club in the community and your help with putting up posters and getting the word out to all your friends and family is key to our success.

It takes every Rotarian in our Club to pull this off: batter makers, sausage cookers,  flapjack flippers, wait staff, table clearers, dishwashers and more. There’s a job for all skill and stamina levels, and we’ll train the first-timers. This is so important for Community awareness of our work and it’s a prime example of Service above Self. Not only are we providing a Community service, but it is very key to building Club spirit and it’s actually FUN!

The key to success is committed Club participation by every member, both financially and by volunteering for a job on April 14.

Over the next few weeks, you will each receive a packet of 10 tickets for you to either sell or give away as you choose. We expect you to pay the Club $50 for the tickets, regardless of how you choose to distribute them. We will also be selling tickets at the door, though the price will be $8 for adults and $4 for kids.

We will also be canvassing you to sign up for a particular task or work slot. We hope that there will be something that each of you is interested in doing – both the veterans and our newer members. There are 50+ work slots, most a couple of hours on Sunday morning. Early or late risers, there are a variety of tasks which need doing.

Please join us in making the return of the Blueberry Pancake Breakfast a successful one for both the Club and the Community. Reach out to us with your questions or to volunteer.

kEEPING bELFAST MAINE BEAUTIFUL
sAVE THE dATE!
Saturday, May 11 is the date for the Keep Belfast Maine Beautiful project.

Rotary has participated for the past five years in this city wide project to clean up the streets and byways of the City of Belfast.  We have quite a long section of Highway 1 from Congress to the bridge to cleanup and we need to have good participation to make it a success.

We will meet at OPALBUILD (the old armory) on Route 1 at 9am.  Everyone usually finishes their section by 10:30 am  -11:00 am.

Following the cleanup there is a BBQ lunch in the parking lot beside the Front Street shipyard.

There will be a signup sheet at the Rotary meetings in April or you can text Bev O’Malia at 517-256 -4675 with your name, email address and T-shirt size.  Bring  family and friends to help in this fun and worthwhile project.
Speaker nicolle littrell:

Our guest speaker on February 21st was Nicolle Littrell with a wonderful presentation and slide show as she described the inspiration for her business DoryWoman Rowing.  Nicolle is an open water rower, licensed Maine Guide, filmmaker and photographer.
