President's Monthly Message

As my tenure as President nears close to its finality, the months just seem to get busier. And so does my appreciation for the efforts of the many Belfast Rotarians that make our accomplishments possible.

We were saddened to learn this month of the deaths of two Rotarian family members…Charlie Lods, husband of Robina Lods, and Helen “Red” Starrett, mother of Bruce Starrett. Our thoughts go out to Robina and Bruce and their families.

April brought another successful pancake breakfast lead by Mary Mortier. It all went off without a hitch per usual and served up pancake and sausage to the many in support of our clubs efforts to feed the hungry. I think we fed a few hungry Rotarians and their families in the process.

Speaking of eating, Rotarians were well represented helping and just plain eating at Habitat for Humanity’s Café Italia. Seems Bill Abbott had another good time . Rumor has it he did leave with his original date, Jill Goodwin. He sure has something about him that attracts the girls.

We had our first Rotary bowling outing this month as well. Many thanks go out to Jill Goodwin for the idea and organizing it. It was a great time, but for those in attendance obvious that none of us were ready for the PBA. I don’t think those lanes will ever be true again what with all the divots left from our delivery. Rumor has it that only one Rotarian dropped the ball in his back swing, but without injury to himself or bystanders.

We were able to officially announce our Rotary Peace Fellowship winner Stephen Brimley. Press releases have gone out. It is an exciting time to have been the sponsoring club for this, District 7790s 1st Peace Fellow. In support of Stephen, I have sent a letter to all the Clubs in the District to help raise funds for Stephen and his family while he is attending this 3 month University study. Many thanks to Su Wood for writing the letter and also getting it translated into French for our Canadian Club correspondence.

Members are busy working on our Golf Tournament fundraising in support of our Scholarship program. The interviews of the applicants have been conducted and the award winners chosen. The culmination of all these efforts will come on May 22nd at the Hutchinson Center. There we will highlight the winners and their accomplishments. Make sure to not miss this meeting.

Perhaps the highlight of the month was the presentation of Belfast Rotary’s first “Service Above Self” award to Allen Holmes. I don’t think one could find a more deserving candidate who embodies Rotary’s motto. Special thanks to Lee Woodward for his presentation of Allen’s service to his community and the sport of field hockey.
